Specialty coffee production at Native Root Coffee is based on the rigorous application of good agricultural practices, with a focus on sustainability, ancestral knowledge, and adaptation to the geographic context of Tierradentro, Cauca. This article describes the planting process on our farm, from seed selection to planting the young trees in the field.

The quality of Colombian specialty coffee begins with proper seed selection. On our farm, we select seeds from healthy, ripe, and high-yielding fruit. In this case, we are planting the pink Bourbon variety for its cup potential and premium status in the market as an exotic variety.

We germinate the seeds in beds of fine sand under controlled shade. Once germinated, the seedlings are transferred to nursery bags with a substrate composed of black soil, organic fertilizer, and sand, where they remain for approximately 3 to 4 months. During this period, irrigation, pest control, and manual weeding are carried out.

The soil is previously analyzed to determine its nutritional status. It is prepared by clearing, laying furrows, and applying organic fertilizers. This stage ensures that the land is in optimal condition to receive the new seedlings.

When the seedlings reach 15 to 30 cm in height and have 4 to 6 pairs of true leaves, they are transplanted into the plot. The spacing we used for this variety was 1.5 m x 2 m between plants. This density allows for good ventilation, sunlight exposure, and phytosanitary management.

Isidro explains the planting process

The success of this process depends on the knowledge and dedication of Juliet, Jaqueline, Ana, and Isidro, who are responsible for on-farm production and are partners in the company. Their work represents Native Root's commitment to agricultural excellence and Nasa cultural heritage. Their empirical experience, scientific knowledge, and adaptability have been essential in nursery management, seed selection, and the establishment of new crops.

The planting system integrates agroecological principles: use of natural fertilizers, plant cover, association with shade-producing species, and conservation of water sources. These practices contribute to soil health and the resilience of the coffee ecosystem, consistent with our company's sustainability values.

The planting process on our farm follows a production model that combines indigenous coffee traditions with modern agronomic principles. Every stage, from seed selection to field planting, is executed with precision and responsibility, ensuring a solid foundation for the production of high-quality Colombian specialty coffee.
